[me copypasting a note into my threads bc it's going in all of them: scien's changed back into his rumpled outfit except it's probably more obvious than ever than he doesn't have his left arm because the sleeve is just floppily trailing next to him. on that sleeve, there is a new bloodstain on it like it was used to wipe something. help!

but he'll answer plainly because gregor was polite enough to endure his interrogation:]

No one on Apréchéle lives past the age of 23.
egodist: (✧ take my hand)

[personal profile] egodist 2024-02-25 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
No. To answer what I'm sure you're curious about, I've been 23 for about 60 years.
egodist: (✧ i made a deal with the demons)

[personal profile] egodist 2024-02-25 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
No, and technically not.

I'm something called a Reliver, a type of invention I developed in order to fight off the curse that plagues Arpéchéle. Another identical body that carries over memories from the past life, and allows people to live again for another twenty-three year cycle.

[a nod. it's clones!]

Life cycle. I haven't bothered to look into time travel yet [y. yet.] though I know some countries are beginning their research.
egodist: (✧ i'll even indulge in your selfishness)

[personal profile] egodist 2024-02-25 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
The technology is available to anyone who can complete the paperwork process in time, and has the funds for it. It's not necessarily cheap, but I don't think it's prohibitive either if you really make the informed decision early on that you want to be a Reliver.

I wouldn't develop a technology to save lives only to limit it to the wealthy.

[scien actually hates more rich people than not]

About half of our population on the island is Relivers.
egodist: (✧ so get ready i'm here)

[personal profile] egodist 2024-02-25 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
I only need enough money from the average person to cover the cost of the procedure. My research funding typically comes from the wealthy.

[though at the second question, scien's expression turns into an unimpressed one:]

Our society is fairly out of the norm. No one processes death in a reasonable way, and they'd probably be seen as heartless monsters anywhere else.

[a beat]

I don't mind talking, but I won't accept answering questions one-sidedly. Most of what I know about your situation comes from your coworker.
egodist: (✧ killing spree)

[personal profile] egodist 2024-02-25 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
You don't.

[he agrees way too readily at that, and it does make him wonder - ]

I've heard of how dangerous your line of work is, and the pain that comes with it. So why engage? Duty? Responsibility? Debt?
egodist: (✧ but bad boys bring heaven to you.)

[personal profile] egodist 2024-02-25 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
What is it that you need? Is it something that only they can give you?
egodist: (✧ i made a deal with the demons)

[personal profile] egodist 2024-02-25 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
Can't? Or won't?

[scien doesn't mind either way, he just would prefer specifics.]

Does this have to do with the message that the system wrote for you exposing your sad backstory?

[please be nice i'm begging]
egodist: (✧ that you've fattened up deliciously)

[personal profile] egodist 2024-02-25 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
[help help shakes down limbco for deets]

It was a bit pathetic, but most of those posts were. [thank you scien you bitch] In the end, it only matters how you feel about it.

Unresolved trauma seems like a pain.
egodist: (✧ take my hand)

[personal profile] egodist 2024-02-25 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not an emotional person to begin with. What happens to me is a result of my actions, and I handle the consequences. None of it matters as long as I'm able to complete my research.

[strangely, somehow, he sounds like he's telling the truth? like the ills of human life really don't touch him]
egodist: (✧ so get ready i'm here)

[personal profile] egodist 2024-02-25 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
Aside from being condemned to premature death? No.

On Arpéchéle, I served as their savior. Not many would dare to cross me, when their survival rests in my hands. Some might come to kill me and even succeed, but that still is a result of my choices.

[scien is a huge asshole but at least he's aware of it and knows what trouble he invites? does that count for something?]
